Crystalline quartz in shades of purple, lilac, or mauve is called amethyst.
It is a stone traditionally worn to guard against drunkennes and to instill a sober and serious mind.
Usually faceted, amethyst has distinctive inclusions that looks like tigerstripes, thumbprints or feathers.
Amethyst is found in alluvial deposits or in geodes. Some of the largest geodes containing amethys are in Brazil.
